A sobbing little girl stood near a small church from which she had been turned away because it “was too crowded.” “I can’t go to Sunday School,” she sobbed to the pastor (牧師) as he walked by.Seeing her shabby appearance, the pastor guessed the reason, and, taking her by the hand, took her inside and found a place for her in the Sunday School class. The child was so touched that she went to bed that night thinking of the children who have no place to worship Jesus.
Some years later, this child lay dead in one of the poor buildings and the parents called for the kindhearted pastor, who had befriended their daughter, to handle the final arrangements. As her poor little body was being moved, a worn purse was found which seemed to have been picked up from some trash dump.Inside was found 57 cents and a note scribbled in childish handwriting which read, “This is to help build the little church bigger so more children can go to Sunday School.”
For two years she had saved for this offering of love. When the pastor tearfully read that note, he knew instantly what he would do.Carrying this note, he told people the story of her unselfish love and devotion.
A newspaper learned of the story and published it.It was read by a Realtor who offered them a parcel of land worth many thousands. When told that the church could not pay so much, he offered it for 57 cents.
Church members made large donations.Checks came from far and wide.Within five years the little girl’s gift had increased to $250,000, a huge sum for that time.
When you are in the city of Philadelphia, look up Temple Baptist Church, with a seating capacity of 3,300 and Temple University, where hundreds of students are trained.Have a look, too, at the Good Samaritan Hospital and at a Sunday School building which houses hundreds of Sunday scholars, so that no child in the area will ever need to be left outside during Sunday school time.

At the end of my senior year of high school, I got a job working at a local coffee shop.I thought the job would be easy and stress-free.I pictured myself pouring the best coffees, making delicious doughnuts (炸面包圈), and becoming friends with regular customers.
I wasn’t expecting the people with enormous orders, the women who complained that the coffee was much too creamy (含乳脂的), or the men who wanted their iced coffees remade again and again until they reached perfection.I couldn’t seem to please anyone.
One rainy day, one of my regular customers came in looking upset. He said he felt like getting in bed, pulling the sheets up over his head, and staying there for a few years.I knew exactly how he felt.
Before he left, I handed him a bag along with his iced coffee. He was surprised, since he hadn’t ordered anything but coffee.I had given him his favorite type of doughnut.
“It’s on me,” I told him.“Have a nice day.”
He smiled and thanked me before heading back out into the rain.
The next day, it was still raining.I spent my afternoon hanging out the window handing people their orders.I was completely wet and freezing cold.Worse, no one was tipping that day.Every time I looked into our empty tip jar, I grew more depressed.
In the evening, the customer from the day before drove up to the window. He handed me a pink rose and a note.He said that not many people took time to care about others and he was glad there were still people like me in the world. With a friendly wave, he drove away.
I ran to the back of the shop and read the note.It read:
Christine,
Thanks for being so sweet, kind and thoughtful yesterday. It is so nice to meet someone who’s indeed nice. Please don’t change your ways! Have a great day! –Hank
After that, whenever I felt depressed or sick of coffee, I thought of Hank and his kindness. Then I would smile, hold my head up high, clear my throat and ask politely, “How can I help you?”

Most of us think that when we step under a shower we’re getting clean. We are, but we’re also giving a home to lots of tiny little creatures we didn’t even know about.
A showerhead carries thousands of bacteria (細(xì)菌) called Mycobacterium. These can cause problems like coughs and tiredness, and a general feeling of poorliness (身體不舒服).When you turn on the water, the bacteria go from the showerhead onto and into your body.
This is a finding of Norman R.Pace and his team at the University of Colorado, in the US.The scientists investigated bacteria in all kinds of human environment, including showers.
Pace's team looked at 45 showerheads in nine American cities. They discovered that 30 percent of them had large amounts of flying Mycobacterium.
But Pace said that they pose few threats to the health.Only those with a frail (脆弱的) immune (免疫的) system might need to worry.
He told the New York Times that the bactertia are not as unpleasant as might be thought. He said that having a shower is no more dangerous than anything else we do in the morning.
But for those who feel sick about the idea of all those microorganisms (微生物), he had some advice.
Let the water run for 30 seconds before getting into the shower. Why? The number of bacteria is smaller than when the water is just turned on.If that seems like a waste of water, he added that you could also change your showerhead every few months.
But Pace had good news too.He has also been testing the air in US subways.Apart from iron particles (粒子), which are ground off the track by the wheels of trains, subway air is fresh. The reason is that a train’s movement pumps fresh outdoor air into the tunnels(隧道).
Pace explained that he wanted to understand the natural microbial(微生物的) environments of public places. This kind of knowledge might help detect the microbes to be used in a bioterrorist (生物恐怖分子) attack.
64.According to the finding of Norman R.Pace, after taking a shower, we might ______.

Since weeks ago, China has been involved in a worldwide A/H1N1 flu that has already killed more than 80 people in the middle of May, 2009, in Mexico and has turned into a global pandemic.
The central government has asked people entering China from the virus-hit countries to report flu-like symptoms(癥狀)to the authorities. In an emergency notice issued on Saturday night, the country’s top quality watchdog ordered the Customs to check passengers’ temperature, too.
A Beijing airport official Li said Customs officers are on a high alert(警戒)level.
“Three temperature detectors are now in operation. We’re ready with protection garments and equipment, too.Passengers flying in from Mexico and other A/H1N1 flu-hit countries are being monitored closely,” he said.
The Ministry of Health, however, said yesterday there was no evidence to suggest that a person would contract the disease by eating pork.
Hong Kong, too, has raised its alert level against the flu to “serious”.Secretary for Food&Health, Mr.York Chow urged people to avoid visiting places from where A/H1N1 flu cases have been reported, and said the virus would be added to Hong Kong’s list of the diseases which have been noticed.
The terrible A/ H1N1 flu has been contracted by about 4000 people in Mexico, and most of the killed were aged between 25 and 45.
The virus has also infected about 5,000 people in the US.The US Center for Disease Control said this kind of virus is spreading from human to human, raising fears of a global pandemic.

The Vienna-based researchers showed that dogs will stop doing a simple task when not rewarded if another dog, which continues to be rewarded, is present.
The experiment consisted of taking pairs of dogs and getting them to present a paw for a reward. On giving this “handshake” the dogs received a piece of food. One of the dogs was then asked to shake hands, but received no food. The other dog continued to get the food when it was asked to perform the task.
The dog without the reward quickly stopped doing the task, and showed signs of anger or stress when its partner was rewarded.
To make sure that the experiment was really showing the interaction between the dogs rather than just the frustration of not being rewarded, a similar experiment was conducted where the dogs performed the task without the partner. Here they continued to present the paw for much longer.
Dr Frederike Range from the University of Vienna says this shows that it was the presence of the rewarded partner that was the greater influence on their behaviour.
“The only difference is one gets food and the other doesn’t, they are responding to being unequally rewarded.” she said.
The researchers say this kind of behaviour, where one animal gets frustrated with what is happening with another, has only been observed in primates(靈長(zhǎng)類) before.
Studies with various types of monkeys and chimpanzees show they react not only to seeing their partners receiving rewards when they are not, but also to the type of reward.
The dog study also looked at whether the type of reward made a difference.Dogs were given either bread or sausage, but seemed to react equally to either.Dr Range says this may be because they have been trained.
72.The dogs refused to give the paw when they_______.
A.found another dog was given nothing
B.felt they were not treated equally
C.were aware they received less food
D.were given too much reward
73.What would the dogs do if they presented their paw alone?
A.They would go on with the performance much longer.
B.They would be too shy to present their paw.
C.They would miss their partners.
D.They would compare what they got with that of others.
74.According to the passage, compared with dogs, monkeys and chimpanzees ______.

One possible version:
Being passionate, honest and hard-working, a good student is always listening and learning.Personally speaking, I strongly believe that honesty is of utmost importance among dozens of good qualities.
There is a proverb that goes ‘Honesty is the best policy’, and it seems as true as it was when first coined. The most important element in human relationships, whether business or personal, is trust.
Here is one of my secrets.I once lied to my parents because of my poor scores.Having known the real fact from teachers, they praised and encouraged me, showing their deep love.Later days, my conscience swallowed me, growing as I told lie after lie in an effort to conceal my original deceit.I gave it up, and chose to be frank.Wow! It is better to stick to the truth!
From then on, I have kept the following in my minds: If it is not true, don’t say it.If it is not right, don’t do it.Honesty is not only the best policy, but also a principle, which is absolutely essential for the good and happy living of life.

IOC President Jacques Rogge gave a thumbs-up to Beijing’s preparations for the 2008 Olympic Games on Tuesday when he was invited to attend British Olympic Association’s centennial celebrations.
“Their work is excellent. We are very pleased by that,”he said.“I am sure the Beijing Olympic Games will be a complete success.”
Rogge also expected a close bidding race for the 2012 Olympics, saying that he didn’t expect a big vote difference.
The IOC is to decide in Singapore on July 6 whether to hand the 2012 summer games to London, Madrid, Moscow, New York or Paris—with the French capital the favourite.
