　　定冠詞the與this/that/these/those同源，在輔音前讀[??]，在元音前或強(qiáng)調(diào)時(shí)讀作[?i]，意為“這、那、這些、那些”等。

　　1.定冠詞的含義

　　(1)表示特定的人或物

　　這種用法可以表示上文提到過的或談話雙方都明確的人或物，特指某人或某事物，以區(qū)別于同類中的其他人或事物。

　　Is this the book that you are looking for?

　　這就是你正找的書嗎?

　　Would you mind turning up the radio a little? I can't hear it clearly.

　　你把收音機(jī)的音量調(diào)大一點(diǎn)好嗎?我聽不清楚。

　　(2)表示地球、宇宙中的獨(dú)一無二的事物

　　世界上獨(dú)一無二的東西很多，這里所指的獨(dú)一無二主要是指各種天體及世界上比較有影響的物體。

　　Man is now studying and using the sun.

　　人類正在研究和利用太陽。

　　Man traveled to the moon scores of years ago.

　　幾十年前人類就登上了月球。

　　(3)表示地點(diǎn)、方向、時(shí)間

　　用于表示在具體的地點(diǎn)、方位，具體的時(shí)間或某天的一部分等。

　　We have friends all over the world.

　　我們的朋友遍及世界。

　　My parents live in the country.

　　我的父母住在鄉(xiāng)下。

　　in the east在東方

　　from the west從西方

　　on the left 在左邊

　　on the right在右邊

　　to the right朝右邊

　　in/at the beginning在開始

　　in/at the end在末尾

　　in the middle of... 在中間

　　in the morning在早晨

　　in the afternoon在下午

　　in the centre在……中央

　　注意：

　　在表示季節(jié)的名詞前常不用冠詞。

　　in spring在春天

　　in autumn在秋天(美國(guó)用in the fall，the不可省略)

　　但如果指具體某年的某個(gè)季節(jié)，需用冠詞。

　　in the spring of the year 2004 2004年的春天

　　有時(shí)如果出現(xiàn)對(duì)稱的方位或時(shí)間時(shí)，冠詞往往可省略或不用。

　　from (the) east to (the) west 從東到西

　　day after day日復(fù)一日

　　day by day 一天天地逐漸

　　(4)表示某類屬的全體

　　這種情況常用于單數(shù)名詞前，代表一類人或事物。

　　Do you know who invented the computer?

　　你知道是誰發(fā)明了計(jì)算機(jī)嗎?

　　The cat，like the dog，is liked by many people.

　　貓和狗一樣被很多人喜歡。
